The UoN Open Day enters its Day Two with CBPS having representations from the Schools of Biological Sciences, Mathematics, Physical Sciences and Computing & Informatics as well as the Institute of Climate Change and Adaptation (ICCA).

The School of Physical Sciences is represented by the Department of Physics which is showcasing a state of art 3D Design of Solar PV systems for homes, large electricity consumers such as industries, educational institutions well as electricity generation plants. The design tool offers solutions both for offgrid as well as grid interactive installations.

During a tour to the CBPS stand, the Vice Chancellor Prof. Phillip Mbithi was taken through the services offered by the department on energy solutions by Dr Justus Simiyu who is spearheading the project. Among the services offered through the design tool are solar PV design for domestic or commercial roof top as well as utility scale solar PV generation. The solutions range from cost cutting measures to revenue generation with guaranteed return on investment of a stipulated time frame. The Vice Chancellor was impressed by the venture and recommended that a follow-up appointment is arranged to move the project to next level. This is strengthened by a proposal to design solar PV system for the university on its campuses targeting the vast roofspace available across all the campuses and further offer solutions to the infamous power outages in the halls of residence that occasionally lead to students rioting and damaging property.

There already exist a  500 Wp pilot installation to the Department of Physics rooftop that is powering essential loads to the department hence making the whole project viable.
