The Department of Physics has organized a one day workshop targeting School of Physical Sciences 2nd Year preparing to specialize in different areas as they join 3rd Year of their Course. The Workshop will take place on Friday July 6, 2018 at Millenium Hall One starting 8.00am to 1.00pm. The Theme of the Workshop being 'ENHANCING OUR SKILLS FOR STRATEGIC MARKET ENTRY', is an opportunity for the students to interact with the University Lecturers, Government representatives and accomplished entrepreneurs in Science as they prepare for their career paths. Among the Invited Guests are Dr Rose Mutiso, CEO Mawazo Institute and Dr. David Otwoma, Chief Scientist, National Commission for Science Technology & Innovation. The Workshop will be officially opened by the Principal, CBPS Prof. Bernard Aduda while the Key Note Address will be delivered by Dr. Rose Mutiso.

Dr Otwoma who holds a PhD in Radiation Physics, MSc in Nuclear Science and a BSc in Physics from the University of Nairobi is a seasoned civil servant having served from 1988 to present in both local and international civil service. He is the current Chairman of the Eastern Africa Association for Radiation Protection and has previously held the position of Secretary (Nuclear) in the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum, seconded to the Nuclear Electricity Project (2011-2013). He has also served as the Chief Science Secretary at the National Council for Science and Technology (2007-2011) and a Nuclear Safeguards Inspector at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna Austria (1999-2006). His impressive portfolio of awards includes Nobel Prize for peace for the year 2005 as IAEA SG staff shared with the IAEA Director General Dr. M. Albaradei, and the Kenya National Commission for Science, Technology and Innovation award in 2013 in recognition for research contributions on both national and international levels to the R&D in Radiation Protection Dosimetry. Dr Otwoma will enlighten our students on the opportunities Science, Technology and Innovation has for us to grab.

Dr. Mutiso is the Co-Founder and CEO of The Mawazo (“Ideas”) Institute, a Nairobi-based think tank. She is an accomplished Scientist with significant experience as a researcher and practitioner working on technology and policy aspects of energy, environment, and innovation issues in North America, South Asia, and Sub-Saharan Africa.  She is a Materials Scientist by training with research experience in the fields of nanotechnology and polymer physics and is passionate about harnessing science & technology to improve lives. Dr Mutiso holds other international portfolios such as Senior Fellow & Energy Access Policy Fellow, Office of International Climate and Clean Energy in the U.S. Department of Energy Office of International Affairs. She has previously held the Energy and Innovation Policy Fellow (AAAS/AIP) in US Congress, Office of Senator Christopher A. Coons (2013 – 2014)

Dr Mutiso has a Bachelor of Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering Degree from Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth College as well as BA Engineering Sciences from the same College. She holds a PhD in Material Science & Engineering from University of Pennsylvania.

She brings fresh ideas and strategies for tackling the challenges and opportunities in the world of science to our students.

This workshop is sponsored by the International Science Programmes (ISP) of Uppsala University Sweden,  Materials Science and Solar Energy Network for Eastern and Southern Africa (MSSEESA) and the Department of Physics, University of Nairobi. To the students: DO NOT MISS THIS GREAT OPORTUNITY!
