North West University of Potchefstroom
SUNfarming GmbH Germany and North West University Potcheftroom South Africa (NWU) have jointly organized a two week training on food and energy project at Potchefstroom. The ongoing training started on 25th of April 2016 and is scheduled to end on 7th May, 2016. Dr. Justus Simiyu and David Karibe from the department of physics, University of Nairobi are currently attending the training as master trainers. This is one of the activities that are lined up for implementation as outlined in the recently singed MOU between the university of nairobi and SUNfarming GmbH.
Other teams participating are from Botswana International University of Science and Technology (BIUST) and Faculty of engineering NWU. In the training, the participants are learning design, assembly and installation of PV integrated green houses on the university ground as well as PV roof integrated modular and displaceable houses known as SUN Homes. The two week long programme will culminate into a strategic partnership meeting between SUNfarming GbmH and African Universities: BIUST, University of Cape Coast, Ghana, Copper Belt University Zambia and Addis Ababa Science and Technology University Ethiopia. Expected to attend from the University of Nairobi in the strategic meeting are Prof. Jane Mariara acting DVC RPE and Prof. Julius Mwabora, chairman, department of Physics.Speaking at the training grounds, Markus Koehn, the head of international projects Africa at SUNfarming GbmH, promised that by the end of the training, the master trainers will be able to launch similar trainig at their respective institutions before the end of 2016. The training package will include a donation of a 5m by 5m PV integrated greenhouse to be set up at the University, Chiromo campus grounds.
