This document gives a summary of the events, activities, and achievements within the physics department during the year 2020

  1. Introduction

The Department of Physics is one of the oldest departments of the University of Nairobi established in 1956. The Department of Physics is located in Chiromo Campus, Off-Riverside Drive. It is one of four departments of the School of Physical Sciences (SPS), in the College of Biological and Physical Sciences CBPS).  The department offers degree programmes in Physics at both undergraduate and postgraduate level and also services other schools of the University of Nairobi among them; the School of Computing and Informatics, School of Engineering, School of Education, and the College of Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences.

  1. Programme AND SERVICES OFFERED

We offer the following undergraduate (B.Sc.) and postgraduate (M.Sc. and Ph.D.) degree programmes:

 Undergraduate degree programmes

  • B.Sc. in Physics
  • B.Sc. in Microprocessor Technology and Instrumentation
  • B.Sc. in Astronomy and Astrophysics

Postgraduate degree programmes

  • M.Sc. in Physics
  • Ph.D. in Physics

There are six areas of specializations (research themes/groups) in the department of physics which include:

  1. Theoretical Physics
  2. Experimental Condensed Matter  Physics
  3. Geo- and Space Physics
  4. Electronics and Instrumentation
  5. Nuclear and Radiation Physics
  6. Laser Physics and Spectroscopy

Trainings and short courses

We also offer the following short courses for skill development:

  • Training in Photovoltaic Design, Sizing Installation and Maintenance (T1 & T2).
  • Data Analysis

Besides, the department services several other schools and departments including:

  1.   STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES

The mission of the department of physics is to provide leadership in pursuit of knowledge in Science and Technology and its application through quality interdisciplinary training, research, and consultancy to improve the welfare of humanity. This mission is to be achieved through the following strategic objectives:

  1. To review and deliver academic programmes in compliance with set policy and regulations.
  2. To utilize the Department’s resources in compliance with the set budgetary levels
  3. To produce one Ph.D. graduate and five M.Sc. graduates every year
  4. To produce eighteen publications in refereed journals per annum
  5. To establish two MOUs with collaborators or two partnership/linkages with industry every year
  6. To mentor at least 120 students on leadership and soft skills
  1.   MAJOR ACHIVEMENTS IN THE YEAR 2020
    1.  Degree programmes reviewed

The following degree programmes were reviewed and approved by the university Senate in July 2020.

  1. B.Sc. in Microprocessor Technology and Instrumentation.
  2. B.Sc. in Astronomy and Astrophysics
    1.  Postgraduate Graduants

The department graduated One (1) PhD student and 2 Masters students in 2020.

    1. PhD Scholarships and Innovation Fund

The department was awarded the  Partnership for skills in Applied Sciences, Engineering and Technology (PASET)-RSIF  Regional Scholarship and Innovation Fund for Second Cohort PhD Students to be trained at the University of Nairobi and was allocated 11 PhD students for (2019/2020) to study in the PhD program in Physics. The students include 6 Kenyans and 5 foreigners from Burkina Faso, Chad, Ghana, Nigeria and Cameroon.

    1.  Research Grant Awards

The department was awarded TWO(2) Research grants in 2020

  1. The PASET - (RSIF) Research Award Grant of Ninety thousand US Dollars (US $ 90,000) for “Research and Development of Photovoltaics based on Lead-Free Perovskite Solar Cell Technology”. Project leader:  Prof. Francis Nyongesa. Collaborating partners: RIKEN Research Centre, Japan; Zewail City of Science and Technology, Egypt; Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPFL), Switzerland; and Masinde Muliro University, Kenya.
  1. The PASET- (RSIF) Capacity Building and Innovation Grant of Fifty thousand US Dollars (US $ 50,000) for “Capacity Building for University-Industry Business Technology Transfer.” Project leader:  Prof. Julius Mwabora. Collaborating partners: Webstudent Intenational AS, Norway; CTO at Arizona State University, Viktoria Solutions Limited, Nairobi, Kenya and Blink Electrics Ltd, Nairobi, Kenya.

4.5  New Partnerships/Linkages With Industry Established

In 2020, the Department established FOUR (4) Partnershios with industry under the research project on Capacity Building for University-Industry Business Technology Transfer under the PASET-RSIF Institutional Innovation Capacity Building Program Grants awarded in August 2020. These are:

4.6    Excellence Awards

          In 2020, four (4) postgraduate students namely:  Mary Taabu Simiyu, Jacinta Okwako, Gloria Maitha and E. Wafula received the First Runners-up UoN Hult Prize on campus program Finals held on the 27th November, 2020 at the UoN Towers, Chandaria Auditorium

    1.    Events, Meetings  And Conferences

        A number of events took place within the year 2020 at the physics department.   These included

 

  1. The 2Nd Young Scientist Material Science and Solar Energy for Eastern and Southern Africa (MSSEESA) Conference on Materials Science and Solar Energy Technology was held virtually from 4th – 6th November, 2020. The participants were only drawn from MSSEESA participating nodes. The participants got an opportunity to interact and exchange ideas in their areas of research. This was also an opportunity for the Young Scientist to learn from senior scientists from other regions within the MSSEESA network.  The conference attracted 70 participants from Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Zambia with international guest speakers from Sweden and Germany and South Africa.
  2. The Department of Physics in conjunction with Solar Energy Research held a short course training for T1 &T2  in solar photovoltaic design, installation, maintenance , commissioning in April 2020 at the Department of Physics, Chiromo Campus.

  1. CORPORATE AND COMMUNITY OUTREACH ACTIVITIES

 

Members of the department were involved in the following corporate and community outreach activities:

 

  1. Corporate Activities

The Department of Physics hosted high school and primary school students and their teachers from the Oaks International Academy, Nairobi on 21st February, 2020 in a public lecture and sky viewing event at the School of Physical Sciences, Chiromo Campus.

 

The public lecture was titled: “A Brief Journey Through the Universe” and was delivered by Dr. Geoffrey O. Okeng’o, an astrophysicist and Senior Lecturer at the Department of Physics. In attendance of the event was the chairman of Department of Physics, staff and students from CBPS.

Additionally, Prof. Julius M. Mwabora, Prof. Bernard Aduda and Dr. Kenneth Kaduki served as Council members in the Kenya National Academy of Sciences.

  1. Community Service
  1. Dr. Sabastian Waita, was appointed by the National Commission for Science, Technology and Innovation (NACOSTI) as a Committee member, Advisory policy on solar power for houses and businesses in April 2020. This policy will influence the regulatory framework instituted by the Kenya Government on solar home/businesses systems.
  1. Dr. S. Waita also directed the addition more solar panels to premises, and installation and commissioning of a 240W solar Photovoltaic system at a Secondary School. This activity enhances the uptake of the PV systems, which consequently has a direct positive effect on the environment, besides contributing to the meeting of the SDG on energy.
  1. The following staff served in School Board of Governors
