A BRIEF JOURNEY THROUGH THE UNIVERSE

DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICS HELD A PUBLIC LECTURE TITLED: “A BRIEF JOURNEY THROUGH THE UNIVERSE” AND A PUBLIC SKY VIEWING EVENT

On Friday 21st February 2020, the Department of Physics hosted high school and primary school students and their teachers from the Oaks International Academy, Nairobi in a public lecture and sky viewing event at the College of Physical and Biological Sciences, Chiromo Campus.

 

The public lecture was titled: “A Brief Journey Through the Universe” and was delivered by Dr. Geoffrey O. Okeng’o, an astrophysicist and Senior Lecturer at the Department of Physics, University of Nairobi. In attendance of the event was the chairman of Department of Physics, staff and students from CBPS.

The participants were thereafter treated to a lively planetarium session in which they were shown a simulation and presentation of the night sky inside a dark planetarium dome. The experience was termed a once in a lifetime event by the pupils and teachers from the Oaks academy, and the students who participated.

 

Thereafter, the participants participated in a public sky viewing with telescopes which was led by B.Sc. astronomy and astrophysics students from the department of physics and a former Bsc astronomy & astrophysics student who now works at the Kenya Space Agency, Mr. Warrakah Changoma. The participants were able to view amongst other things: the planet Venus in its Gibbous phase, the Orion Nebula, the Pleiades, the Jewel Box as well as various stars and constellations in the night sky.
